Thunder and Cinnamon Go Home

When Thunder and Lakota first arrived, they went out with the main herd since I knew they were healthy (just thin).  When Cinnamon and Genesis arrived, they went into the back pasture by themselves.  Within a couple of days, Cinnamon started popping over the fence to be with Thunder and Lakota, so I moved those two into the back with Genesis.  A few days later, Jolie Rose decided that she could also jump the fence and really REALLY wanted to be with the other four.

A couple of months later, I moved all five back out with the main herd and put my old fogies in the back.  Lakota left soon after, leaving just Cinnamon, Jolie Rose, Genesis, and Thunder.  The four stuck together like glue, only allowing Maverick and Sadie to join their clique.

So when Terry and Lawrence decided they wanted to adopt both Cinnamon and Thunder, I was ecstatic!  Now the two can be together forever and live happily ever after.  :)

The two horses will have 47 acres and a huge barn to share with just a miniature horse and a donkey – lucky ponies!

In Limbo

For those waiting on an update on the hearing that was supposed to happen today… it didn’t.  The defendant’s lawyer was filing some motion this morning and the magistrate’s clerk said the hearing probably wouldn’t happen because of that.  I’ve got a couple of calls in to the sheriff to see if he can give me any more specifics about what’s going on.  Unfortunately, this asshat can drag this out for a very long time.

I’ll keep you updated!

Chip off the old block (or Chunky Butt Jr.)

Little Mariah is two months old now and growing like a weed.  She’s looking more and more like Maverick every day, and her personality is certainly a lot like Maverick.  Nothing bothers her, she loves people, and not once have I seen her lay her ears back at anyone.

She and Kita are best buddies and Kita just loves the little tyke.  Mariah prefers to spend more time with Kita than with her own mother most days.  Willow is just the milk bar and Kita is the big sister that teaches her the ways of the world and keeps her from harm.  Willow doesn’t seem to mind the arrangement one bit.

Just like dear old dad, Mariah is stacked.  Like, sherman tank stacked.  Look how wide she is already!

And that butt… doesn’t that remind you of Maverick’s wide load?  It certainly looks nothing like Willow’s rump.

Little one is getting her feet trimmed for the first time next week.  I’ve picked up her feet a few times and she just stands there looking at me.  You can do anything to this little girl and she thinks it’s fun – just like Maverick.  Glenn might have to fight me for this one in a few years! :)

The hearing for the Fairmont horses is tomorrow!  The only word I want to hear when the judge asks for his plea is “guilty”!  I know, wishful thinking.  :(

Stampede!!!

Well… a mini stampede anyway.

Every morning when I head over to the quarantine to feed everyone is usually already in the barn hiding from the bugs.  At dinner time everyone is usually out in the pasture enjoying the cooler weather and shade.  All I have to do is get their attention, then stand back out of the way!

The hearing is still set for Thursday, last I heard.  Please keep your fingers crossed and break out the rabbit’s foot!

Because if I have to give these guys back to the asshat that starved them…

… well, let’s just say I won’t be happy.

Don’t say I never gave you anything

This post is for you Brannon fans out there.  You know who you are. ;)

All of these were taken by Anne’s daughter, Emily, at our fundraiser this past Saturday.  She is awesome with a camera!  Want to see more of Emily’s photography?  Go check out her blog!

What a Day!

Sorry it took me so long to blog about the event yesterday, but I’ve been impatiently waiting for Anne and her daughter to send me the pictures that they took.  Because, as usual, I sucked when it came to getting pictures.  I took TEN.  That’s it.  Only 10.  I’ve only deemed three as blog-worthy, and only slightly at that.  I still haven’t received their pictures, so you’ll just have to be satisfied with mine for now.

All the horses were bathed, some for the first time, on Friday after they arrived at the Fairgrounds (thank you Anne and Michelle!!!).  Everyone did pretty well except for Genesis, who I thought would be the best.  They were all so shiny and soft and not one of them rolled in their stalls while they were still wet.  Good ponies!

Genesis did the most pony rides.  Cinnamon flipped out when the first kid kicked her high on the flanks and squeezed with all her might.  Poor Cinnamon didn’t know what was going on and started prancing around and tossing her head, so the girl rode Genesis instead and Cinnamon was put away for the day.

Genesis got a little grumpy towards the end of the day, even though she only did about 15 pony rides all day and had a lot of break time in between.  She was snapping and biting at her handlers, but was always well-behaved for the kid on her back.

Maverick did a few of the rides, but a lot of the kids arrived while Maverick was having his pedicure so he missed out on quite a few.  Mav has a good-sized crack in his right front so Brannon thought it best to put shoes on the front.  Mav had never been shod before, but you’ve probably already guessed that he was awesome about it.  He yelled for Genesis a couple of times, but was a perfect gentleman for Brannon.

Hopefully, I’ll have more pics to share with you tomorrow.  Considering this was our first year for this event, and the on and off rain showers we had all day, we had a pretty good turnout!  All the horses were stars and Mav and Molly were the only ones that got a little impatient and pawed at their stall doors a couple of times.  I was so proud of all of them!

Ms. Sassy

When Sassy came here she had never been handled since the day she was born.  Just catching her and getting her on the trailer took hours and was pretty traumatic for her (and me!).  She’s taken a long time to get over the fact that I had to manhandle her, and there for awhile, I didn’t think she’d ever trust me.   We had a mutual distrust for each other.  She thought I was going to beat her and I kept a watchful eye on her back feet and teeth at all times.

But now, things are starting to change just a bit.  I no longer feel like she’s going to strike or bite me, and she’s starting to become a curious little mare who thinks I should have cookies on me at ALL TIMES.

She follows me everywhere when I’m out in the pasture and calls to me with her special little bray whenever I’m walking up to the barn.  The problem is… she follows me EVERYWHERE.  Did I mention that?

I was trying to get pictures of some of the horses today for flyers that Anne is doing for the event this Saturday (OMG, is it really only a few days away???).  Miss Sassy made this very  difficult.

Say there human… whatcha got in your hands?  Is that a big black cookie?

Here, let me help you with that…

I had to clean Sassy snot off my lens when she was done, but it was worth it for her to be this curious about the camera and not be worried that I was going to beat her with it.  Once she figured out the camera wasn’t edible, she proceeded to try and eat my hand while I played with her muzzle.  Baby steps!

Lawnmowers don’t swim

Just thought you should know, in case you weren’t already aware of that.  You’re welcome.

Glenn has been gone for two months and was home yesterday because he had some spare time before he could deliver his load in Cincinnati today.  He’s coming home on Thursday and will be here for a week, but it was still nice to have him home for the day to knock off a couple of the “honey-do” items.

While trying to mow the jungle that has become our yard, he noticed a snapping turtle in the pond.  He left the mower running, but pointed it across the hill, instead of up or down the hill.  He went into the house to grab his gun, came back out and was taking aim when I heard him yell “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”!  I was in the garden and couldn’t see the other side of the house, but as soon as I heard the splash I knew what had happened.

Fortunately, the water didn’t get into the carb, so the little amphibian started right back up once we had it out of the water.

{I should also mention that when I stepped into the water to hook the chain to the mower I stepped on a large cow bone.   I love our pond.  Really.}

He didn’t want me taking pictures and blogging about the incident, but… I’m sorry, honey.  It was just way too good to pass up!

Super Pony

Please go check out Maverick’s second ride over on Training the Unwanted.   He is the awesomest pony in the world.  Period.  End of story.  No doubt about it.

I know that “awesomest” is not a word.  But it should be.  I have broke out a lot of horses over the years, and have had some really easy ones.  But none of them could compare to the Mav!

Random Lunch – 6/2/10

I know, I know… I haven’t done a random lunch post in forever.  But I had some things to show and tell you that don’t fit together and I am lacking the necessary creativity to come up with a clever title.  Or even a somewhat decent title.

First of all, the hearing that was scheduled today for the guy that starved the Fairmont horses was for a different set of animal cruelty charges from back in January!  Add that to the arrest for animal cruelty last November, when he was caught dragging a Clydesdale down the road with his truck, and this guy has been busy!  The hearing for the latest charges from April is set for June 17th at 1:00 pm.  At least we only have a few more weeks to wait!

There are two places on my porch where the chickens enjoy laying their eggs:  1) in the left over beet pulp that I haven’t had to feed in months, and 2) in the opened bag of Pro Mix potting soil.  Since all my adult girls are going crazy with the egg laying right now, the supply doesn’t always match the demand and I end up with two hens trying desperately to lay an egg in the same place.

If I could figure out which rooster is tearing up my girls so badly, he’d be in the freezer in no time!

I found a new use for my rabbit hutch.  A friend had some ducklings that one of her hens had hatched and raised, and she needed to find a home for them.

Besides the fact that “mom” doesn’t swim, they’re still a little young to go into the pond.   The rabbit hutch is a temporary holding facility until the other new chickens are out of the outhouse coop.  You see, this so-called friend, also gave me 13 young chickens (because I obviously do not have enough chickens already).   They had been hatched and raised at her place and were “mutts”.  There are 7 hens and 6 roosters – the roosters will end up in the freezer once Glenn comes home next week to do the dirty work!

There was another duckling, half the size of the others and crippled on one leg.  His foot was folded and turned in.  The poor little guy would fall over on his back and get stuck there.  He’d lay there until I came around to pick him up and turn him back over.  I felt so bad for him!  When they first came to my place, I had put them in the old Silkie hutch in the coop.  But the crippled duckling kept getting out somehow, and wandering around the coop trying to figure out how to get back to mom.  Last night was when I went out to the coop to move them to the porch, but I couldn’t find the poor little guy.  I guess he escaped the hutch again and this time was found by a cat before I could get to him.  I looked everywhere and listened for his chirping, but couldn’t find him.

R.I.P little crippled duckling.
