Why don't they eat the lettuce? Or parsley? Or basil? Or or or... why not anything other than my maters and peppers??? Some maters have gone unscathed so far. The little furry devils really seem to enjoy the jalepenos, orange bell peppers, and the ruffled yellow tomato plant the most. And they totally destroyed one of my Litchi tomato plants! This was a new plant I was trying this year. I got the seed from Baker Creek Heirloom http://www.rareseeds.com/ (my favorite place for seed!!!) and the description says it's like a cross between a cherry and a tomato. How can I not try that??? I only potted up two, since they are new and grow to 5' tall with thorns. The top of one is totally chomped off, while only a few leaves from the other were chewed off. I'm hoping the little devils got thorns in their gums and decided to move on to easier chow.
Zeus has voluntarily been staying outside at night, probably because it's cooler outside than in for the big hairy monster. So why isn't he guarding my garden? Why hasn't he made mincemeat out of those thieving rabbits?? And how do they even brave the garden with his incessant barking... all... night... long...?
I know I promised pics of the rest of the horses over the weekend and I failed to deliver on time. Saturday was sunny warm and beautiful so I spent the day trying to catch up on weedeating, push mowing, and gardening. On Friday evening we had a heck of a t-storm that knocked out our DSL. The phone company didn't even know about it until I called them Monday morning and even then they thought it was just my modem. By the time I called again around 5pm they said "oh yeah, it's an area-wide outage not your modem". Gee, thanks. I've been hanging around the phone all day waiting for your tech to call since you said they'd be out with a replacement by 7pm. At least it was raining and had been since Sunday morning so it wasn't like I could have done a lot outside anyway. At least I got the house cleaned... kinda. :)
And because a friend of mine sent me an email reminding me that I had failed my picture duty, I used my lunch break today to go out to the fields and take some pics of the very dirty and still very horny mares.
Semi-sweet Chocolate, the matriarch of the herd and Junior's soul mate. Semi was a rescue from OH 11 years ago. She had been purchased at an Amish auction several hundred pounds underweight and badly abused. The girl who bought her was only at the auction to find a STB mare to breed to a STB stallion at the barn where she boarded her other horse. She brought Semi home and bred her the next day. It soon became clear that Semi didn't trust anyone, didn't want to be touched, and would try to kick anyone that came near her. So the barn owner threw her in a dark stall with no windows for three months. Whenever someone thought to go in and feed or water her, they took a whip with them and beat her into the corner of the stall. They never cleaned the stall. I found out about her on an internet forum because the girl had posted that if someone didn't come and get this hellish mare she was going to have her put down. I was on my way to OH the next day. The story of the farm where Semi was boarded is for another post.
8 months after bringing Semi home, out popped Kita, who far surpassed her mother's height, but has the same gentle spirit, athleticism, STB common sense, and rock-hard feet as Semi.
Willow is another rescue, although I can't take the credit for this one. We bought her from the woman who had rescued her out of the pasture where she'd been left for months. When the doctor who bought her as a two year old for his own child (don't get me started on how wrong it is to buy a baby FOR a baby so they can "grow up together") suddenly had to leave the country... he left Willow behind with no food, shelter, or water. She was emaciated, sickly, and the vet didn't think she'd make it. Now she's a healthy and happy air fern that gains weight simply by breathing.
She's a 5 yo spotted TN Walker, about 15.1 hands. This is Glenn's baby, which is a good thing since she and I don't always see eye to eye on ground manners. ;)
Trying to take a close up pic of Junior was next to impossible without my new pocket pony trying to get in the frame. Junior is looking a lot better, but I'd still like to see a little more weight on him before I start lunging him to build up his back muscles.
And none of my horsey blogs would be complete without a pic of Maverick -- who would not let me walk more than a few feet away to get a good enough picture of him. This was my last attempt at walking away and by the time the camera clicked he was in my face once again. He may not like me so much after his dangly parts get chopped off at the vet's on Thursday!
